Formula & Calculations
A "roofing square" is a unit of area equal to 100 square feet. First, we compute the total area including the waste factor:
Total Area (with waste) = Roof Area × (1 + Waste / 100)
Then, the number of squares is calculated by dividing by 100:
Squares Required = Total Area / 100
Since standard architectural or 3-tab shingle bundles cover exactly 1/3 of a square (33.3 square feet), we multiply the number of squares by 3 and round up to the nearest whole bundle:
Bundles Required = ceil(Squares Required × 3)
