Hip roofs have sloped edges on all four sides, creating triangular and trapezoidal facets. When installing rectangular shingle sheets or metal panels, pieces must be cut at angles along the hips. The cut-off triangular corners are wasted, whereas gable roofs only require straight cuts at the ends.
