How This Calculator Works
To calculate framing lumber for a wall project:

The lumber estimator calculates studs and horizontal plates using standard framing patterns:
- Stud Count:
Studs = ceil((Wall Length / Spacing) + 1). This places one stud at the start and one at each spacing interval along the wall. - Plates Length: Standard walls require three plates: a single bottom plate on the floor and a double top plate at the ceiling.
Total Plates Length = 3 × Wall Length.
The horizontal plate count is calculated by dividing total plate length by the selected board length (e.g. 16 feet):
Plates = ceil(Total Plates Length / 16)

What is the standard spacing for wall studs?
The standard spacing for residential framing is 16 inches on-center. This ensures drywalls (which are 48 inches wide) align perfectly with three stud intervals.
Why do walls have a double top plate?
A double top plate ties adjacent wall sections together structurally and provides a solid bearing surface to support floor joists, ceiling joists, or roof rafters.
How many extra studs do I need for doors and windows?
Typically, you need to add 2 studs for each window opening (a king stud and a jack stud on each side) and 2 studs for each door opening.
What are standard stud heights?
Pre-cut studs are sold in standard lengths of 92-5/8 inches (for 8-foot walls), 104-5/8 inches (for 9-foot walls), and 116-5/8 inches (for 10-foot walls). They are cut shorter to account for the thickness of the bottom plate and double top plate.
