Hot-mix asphalt is calculated by taking the volume of the paved region and multiplying it by standard compacted asphalt density:
Volume = Length × Width × Thickness
Compact asphalt density is generally estimated at 145 lbs per cubic foot (approx. 2.05 tons per cubic yard or 110 lbs per square yard per inch of depth).
The weight formula is:
