How This Calculator Works
To calculate drywall materials:
- Enter the total length of all walls combined. For example, if you are doing a 10ft x 12ft room, the combined wall length is 10+10+12+12 = 44 feet.
- Enter the wall height (standard is 8 or 9 feet).
- Toggle the ceiling option. If enabled, provide the length and width of the room ceiling.
- Select the sheet size (4x8 sheet is standard and easiest to carry; 4x12 reduces seams but is heavy and hard to handle).
- Adjust the waste buffer (10% is standard; use 15% if the room has many corners, doors, or windows).

Drywall surface area is calculated by adding wall area and ceiling area:
Drywall Area = (Wall Length × Height) + (Ceiling Length × Width)
The sheet count is calculated by dividing total area by the sheet area (32 sq ft for a 4x8 sheet, 48 sq ft for a 4x12 sheet), adding waste, and rounding up:
Sheets = ceil((Area / Sheet Area) × (1 + Waste / 100))
Associated materials are calculated using industry estimates per square foot of drywall:
- Joint Tape: 0.07 linear feet of tape per square foot.
- Joint Compound: 0.14 pounds of ready-mix mud per square foot.
