Formula & Calculations
Flooring calculations determine true room square footage and round up to whole manufacturer box quantities:
1. Net Area & Pattern Scrap Waste
Net Area = Length × Width
Gross Area = Net Area × (1 + Pattern Waste / 100)
- Straight Staggered Planks: 10% waste for end-wall off-cuts.
- Diagonal 45° Planks: 15% waste due to angled wall boundary cuts.
- Herringbone Pattern: 20% waste because left and right tongue-and-groove planks require specialized end cuts.
2. Box Rounding Rule
Flooring retailers do not break open cartons. Purchases must always round up to the next full box:
Boxes to Order = ceil(Gross Area / Sq Ft per Box)

Frequently Asked Questions
How many boxes of flooring do I need for a 12x12 room?
A 12x12 room is 144 square feet. With a 10% waste allowance (158.4 sq ft) and assuming standard boxes containing 20 sq ft each, you will need 8 boxes of flooring (158.4 / 20 = 7.92, rounded up to 8 full boxes).
Why do I need to add 10% to 15% waste for flooring?
Planks must be cut to fit along the perimeter walls, around door jambs, and across closet corners. Off-cut pieces shorter than 8 to 12 inches cannot be reused, resulting in natural installation scrap.
How do you calculate flooring for an L-shaped room?
Divide the L-shaped space into two separate rectangular sections (e.g. Area A = 10x12, Area B = 8x10). Calculate the square footage of each rectangle, add them together (120 + 80 = 200 sq ft), add your 10% waste margin (220 sq ft), and divide by the square feet per carton.
Do I need underlayment for luxury vinyl plank (LVP)?
If your LVP has an attached acoustic pad (cork or IXPE foam) on the back of each plank, you do NOT need additional underlayment, though a 6-mil poly vapor barrier is still required over concrete subfloors. If your planks have a bare rigid core, underlayment is mandatory.
Should I keep extra boxes of flooring after the job is finished?
Yes. Always keep at least 1 or 2 unopened boxes in your closet or attic. If an appliance leaks or heavy furniture gouges a plank years later, finding an exact color and click-lock profile match is virtually impossible as manufacturers frequently discontinue product lines.
How much expansion gap should I leave around the perimeter of the room?
Floating laminate, engineered hardwood, and LVP floors expand and contract with seasonal humidity. Leave a consistent 1/4-inch to 3/8-inch expansion gap along all walls, which will be concealed by your baseboard trim and shoe moulding.
