How This Calculator Works
To calculate landscaping mulch:
- Enter the length and width of the garden bed or zone to cover.
- Specify the depth of the mulch layer (typically 2 to 3 inches for weed control and moisture retention, or 4 inches for playground safety zones).
- Choose the retail bag size (2.0 cubic foot bags are the standard size in home improvement stores).
- Add a minor waste buffer (5% is standard for filling irregular corners).

Mulch volume is calculated using the dimensions of the landscape bed:
Volume (Cubic Feet) = Length × Width × Depth × (1 + Waste / 100)
To convert from cubic feet to cubic yards, we divide by 27:
Volume (Cubic Yards) = Volume (Cubic Feet) / 27
Retail bags are sold in cubic foot volumes (typically 2.0 or 3.0 cu ft). The bag count is calculated by dividing the total cubic feet by the bag size and rounding up to the nearest whole bag:
