To calculate the amount of cement needed, we must account for volume shrinkage when dry ingredients (cement, sand, and gravel) are mixed with water. Dry concrete materials shrink by about 35% to 40% when wet. Thus, dry volume is calculated as:

Dry Volume = Wet Volume × 1.54

The cement volume is then determined by the selected mix ratio fraction:

Weight is computed using the dry loose density of standard Portland cement (approx 94 lbs per cubic foot):
